Remedies for a Stinky Kitchen Drain

Remedies for a Stinky Kitchen Drain

At least once, if not more, you will experience a foul smell coming from your kitchen drain. This is very common and can also be a very easy fix with common household items. Don’t worry just yet!

Baking Soda

I’m sure we’re all familiar with this powdery product. Baking soda has properties that help to eliminate rotten odors. Simply pour one cup of baking soda into your sink and allow it to sit for around 5 minutes. After the 5 minutes is up, pour a large pot of boiling water down the drain. This should remove the unpleasant smell from your sink.

White Vinegar

Similar to baking soda, white vinegar can also eliminate nasty smells coming from your sink. All that is needed for this remedy is one cup of white vinegar and a running faucet. Pour the vinegar down the drain, then run hot water down the drain for around 5 minutes. This remedy should remove the odor quickly and easily.

Keeping Your Sink Stink-Free

  • The simplest way to avoid stinky sink drains is to avoid pouring food down the drain. If you do not have a garbage disposal, a drain stopper is a great way to keep food out of the drain. If food happens to slip through, just allow hot water to run for around 5 minutes to help clear the drain.

  • If you have a garbage disposal, make sure to use it! Keep water running if the disposal is turned on, and keep the disposal running long enough based on the amount of food allowed in the drain.

  • Once a month, use a commercial cleaner of some sort to keep those smells away. Citrus fruit is also a great option, such as a lemon. Drop half a lemon in your sink while running the garbage disposal to fight the smells attempting to escape form your sink.
